Treatment for Anxiety
and Low Self-Esteem

How I can help

Initial Assessment

When we first meet, we will spend time discussing what has brought you to therapy. We will explore the things you are struggling with and how this affects you day to day. As part of this process, we will complete several health questionnaires to get a better understanding of your mood and anxiety. We will also discuss past experiences and significant life events, as this can help us to gain more insight into the development of the problem. The assessment usually takes 1- 2 sessions.

Goal setting

Coming to therapy takes a lot of courage and hard work, so having a clear idea of what you are working towards is crucial . After we have developed a shared understanding of what you want to focus on, I will support you to set some therapy goals to work towards.

Therapy goals are all about the behaviour changes you hope to see if therapy is successful.

Imagine you wake up tomorrow and the problem you have been struggling with has completely disappeared. What is the first thing you would notice? what would you do differently that day? Asking yourself these questions can help you to start identifying your therapy goals.

CBT Sessions

CBT sessions take place weekly and usually last 50 minutes. CBT is a structured talking therapy, which means we make a plan at the start of each session of what we will be focusing on. This helps us to make the most of the time we have together and ensures we are progressing towards achieving your therapy goals.

In the initial CBT sessions we will spend time mapping out your current difficulties. This will involve identifying your triggers and how these impact your thought patterns, emotions and how you behave. This is to help us develop a shared understanding of your experience and to identify whats keeping the problem going.

Once we have a clear understanding of the problem, the next step will be to develop an individualised treatment plan. This will include learning and practising new techniques to be able to manage your anxiety in a way that provides long term change. This will involve engaging in techniques in the session with my support and then continuing to practice these changes in your day to day life.

Relapse planning

Coming to therapy is also about planning for endings. Its important that when you reach your goals that you feel confident to maintain the changes you have made. This is where a good relapse plan is key. your relapse plan will guide you to reflect on your learning through therapy, a reminder of the key techniques that have supported you and how to spot any early warning signs of self doubt creeping back in.
